We are in a climate and ecological crisis. If you are still in doubt it is time to look around. Australia is on fire. Over a billion animals are estimated dead. Jakarta is flooded and 30,000 evacuated from their homes. Norway is experiencing an unprecedented heatwave. The Antarctic ice sheet is melting, with daily ice losses 50 years ahead of schedule and 67% of all animal species are now in decline.
The animals need our help.
More than half of all animal species are at threat of extinction and the biological diversity upon which our ecosystems depend are being destroyed at an unimaginable rate. Over 200 species now go extinct every single day.
We need to solve this crisis together, worldwide.
We must stop the destruction of natural habitat and the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides immediately in order to prevent a cascade of events leading to planetary wide ecological collapse.
We must stop measuring wealth in terms of human currency or economic cost. The cost of not acting to protect our planet now is equivalent to the entire world economy,
because ecological collapse will always lead to economic and social collapse.
The broken world system has put shocking amounts of power into the hands of very few, with just 1% of the human population now controlling over 50% of all the world's wealth. Despite knowing the consequences of their operations for many years, this wealth comes from a consumer capitalist system that profits from the destruction of the planet on which we all live, so big business refuses to change.
We must force the change.
On August 14th an amazing young girl named Greta Thunberg, the girl I have painted in this picture, set sail from England to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a small emissions free sailing boat. In doing this she demonstrated her commitment to the fight for our environment and the living planet's future. By refusing to fly and instead taking a dangerous 2 week journey in a small boat she showed the world what a true leader looks like, demonstrating the importance of taking personal responsibility for our impact on the planet,
We need to do more than mitigate our own impact.
The planet now needs our help protect it from the world.
I hold a Masters in Renewable Energy Engineering because I have been concerned about this issue for over a decade myself. I also spent many years in the financial world where I saw how the global economy operates at every level. It is clear to me that we can and must change the future of humanity's energy systems and how to create a sustainable world.
Here I will be sharing the steps we should take to stop the climate crisis in time,
before we face ecological collapse.
For way too long, the politicians and the people in power have gotten away with not doing anything to fight the climate crisis, but we will make sure that they will not get away with it any longer. We are striking because we have done our homework and they have not.
- Greta Thunberg
Over 60% of the entire planet's biodiversity is concentrated in just a few limited areas.
We must protect Earth's last remaining ecological systems.
We must ban all logging in the Amazon. No more being cute about it. No more logging. No more agricultural business. If the Brazilian government does not respect the worlds most valuable natural resource, and the Brazilian people are not willing or able to stop them, then we will have to do it from our side - the consumer side. We are the ones consuming the products producing by burning and clearing the amazon.
The destruction of the amazon turns into a group of products that make a number of companies lots of money.
They make that money by selling their products to us, people they have labelled consumers. Well we are not consumers, we are human beings. We care where are goods come from and how they are made. We care about our planet. We are done consuming products from harmful companies.
By stopping the consumption of goods produced from unsustainable practices we will radically reduce the overall demand, forcing the producers to change their business as they rapidly lose their profits.
If you want to help now this is one of the best ways to start.
Educate yourself on the businesses and products that are harming our planet and immediately stop buying products from those that are leading to the destruction of the amazon rainforest.
Educate yourself further on sustainable and local alternatives to all of your daily and essential products.
Support sanctions on any country, anywhere, that is allowing ecologically unsustainable operations to continue threatening the Earth's ecosystems. The whole of the business world must rapidly come to understand that environmental destruction is not only bad for the planet, it is extremely bad for their business. `When they understand this, they will stop.
We must act at the governmental, financial level and the individual level (YOU) to make ecologically sound decisions together. All unsustainable behaviour must become completely unprofitable to anyone who engages in it, so that it stops. If you make environmental harm cost more money than it produces, then it will stop. At the industrial scale which is harming our planet, this action alone will stop it. `We all have a part to play in this. It must no longer be possible to profit from the destruction of this planet.
An incredible little girl has given her young life to save this world.
We must help her.
